ANLD 2015
Garden Tour for Garden Design
Debbie Teashon
I’ve always heard good things about the ANLD Designer’s Garden Tour in the Portland, Oregon region, yet never went on it. This year I received an invitation to participate in a pre-tour event of all the gardens participating. With much excitement, I drove to Portland.
With a garden tour put on by the Association of Northwest Landscape Designers and sponsored by Garden Design magazine, Orchard Supply Hardware, All Season Plants, Al’s Garden Center, and other great sponsors, I went in believing this tour was going to be extra special. I wasn’t disappointed. Getting to meet the designers, and even some of the artists whose work is found in the gardens was a definite plus, and the gardens were superb.
I arrived early to the first garden and was allowed to photograph the garden before the crowd gathered. Sometimes being early pays off; however, the rest of the afternoon I trailed behind everyone, reluctantly leaving each garden. There never is enough time on a tour to enjoy a garden and with eight gardens on the itinerary; it was good we had tour monitors reminding me it was time to go to the next one. I could have spent the whole day in each one exploring the creative details that went into each designed garden.
Halfway through the day, we were fed lunch at Tigard’s Orchard Supply Hardware. Walking through the store made me wish I lived in Portland, just to have access to that place!
These gardens hold a wealth of ideas for you from fantastic garden designers in the region. Proceeds from the tour benefit the ANLD scholarship program for aspiring landscape designers at Clackamas or Portland Community Colleges.
