Judges Vote for Outstanding Gardens
SEATTLE - In a year when practical, livable, low-maintenance gardens are a focus for consumers, the 2010 Northwest Flower and Garden Show challenged display garden creators to combine functional aspects of their designs with beauty. The resulting gardens are each uniquely different and demonstrate how home gardeners can have it all--as well as the time to put up their feet and enjoy it.
The 2010 Judging Panel was a distinguished international group of horticultural professionals, led by Fergus Garrett, head gardener at Great Dixter, London; Roger Swain, author, gardener & former host of PBS's 'The Victory Garden"; and veteran San Francisco-based landscape architect, Andrea Cochran, Andrea Cochran Landscape Architecture.
The judges awarded seven Gold Awards, six Silver Awards, seven Bronze Awards

and two Crystal Awards to the regional creators, who integrated sustainable features with thousands of flowers and plants in their full-scale themed gardens. The prestigious Founder's Cup designating Best in Show, was awarded to Le Jardin Home & Garden Design and B. Bissell General Contractor LLC.
Judges were particularly delighted by the powerful simplicity of the ecological, functional design collaboration of Seattle Tilth and NW Bloom EcoLogical Landscapes, owned by Jessica Bloom. Bloom's eight-year old son Noah was a co-designer of the "urban homestead," which demonstrates how an entire family can live sustainably in the city, regardless of their income.
In this garden, titled "A Family's Little Farm in the City," raised beds and containers grow organic produce, two friendly goats nibble weeds and produce daily milk, and chickens aerate and enrich the soil as their mobile "tractor coop" is moved around the homestead. The whimsical garden demonstrates a closed loop system in which every

resource is put to maximum use and nothing is wasted, and "rain wise" principles, composting and solar power are part of daily life. Along with its Gold Award, the garden received the American Horticultural Society Environment Award, the Pacific Horticultural Society Award, the Sunset Western Living Award and the 425 Magazine Award.

The Seattle Homes & Lifestyles Magazine Award was given to the Washington Chapter of the Association of Professional Landscape Designers, which created a multi-use space combining structural elements, hardscape materials, and innovative plant pairings and emphasized the importance of working with a landscape designer to fully realize a garden's potential.
The Northwest Flower & Garden Show continues through Sunday, February 7 at the Washington State Convention and Trade Center, located at 7th & Pike in Seattle, WA, 98101. The show is a beloved tradition that celebrates its 22nd year in 2010, and the first year that the show is produced by Northwest-based O'Loughlin Trade Shows, Inc.
