Fuchsia 'Pat's Dream'
Family: Onagraceae | |||||||
|
Pronounced: FEWK-see-ah GROWING GUIDE Geographic origin:
Garden.
Mature size: Height: 3-4 feet. Flowering period: Summer until first frost. Flowering attributes: Red buds opening to violet corollas and red sepals. Light: Full sun to partial shade. Soil: Fertile, moist, well-drained soil. Feeding: Heavy feeders, so fertilize monthly with a complete organic fertilizer, from spring through July. Propagation methods: Softwood cuttings in spring. | Semi-ripe cuttings in late summer. Pruning methods: In spring, when buds begin to swell, trim to shape and prune out dead stems. Rainy Side NotesTo my delight, this fuchsia is a prolific bloomer; it covers itself with hundreds of flowers from June until first frost. Reflexed, red sepals and blue-purple corollas with red veining and red anthers are a remarkable combination. The corollas take on violet hues as the flower ages. In front of the small fuchsia shrub, I planted Primula viallii, whose flowers echo the colors of 'Pat's Dream', a satisfying combination in the shade beneath a large plum tree.
