Korea.
Mature size: Height 18 inches (45 cm). Width 12 inches (30 cm). Flowering period: Late summer, early autumn. Flowering attributes: Cymes of tubular, yellow flowers with the shuttlecocks held outwards on erect stems. Leaf attributes: Palmately lobed, somewhat hairy, green leaves. Growth habit: Clump forming. Light: Partial shade. Soil: Humus rich, moist, well-drained acidic soil. Feeding: Side dress with compost or manure and leaf mould. Propagation Methods: Sow seed in pots as soon as ripe, or in spring and place in cold frame. | Cuttings in early summer. | Divide carefully in spring. Rainy Side NotesThere are two species in a genus that is a member of the Hydrangea family. Although K. coreana (also spelled K. koreana in the trade) is thought to be a form of K. palmata, it has not been conclusively determined if they are indeed two species. A native of Korea this larger Kirengeshoma is beautiful in the woodland garden in partial shade or full shade. In a woodland setting, this perennial can send up stems to six feet when given plenty of moisture. Personally, I have not seen it myself, as I am not willing to give extra moisture, beyond my normal water routine. It is beautiful in a woodland setting as this one is in Heronswood’s garden.
