Flowering period:
Summer.
Flowering attributes:
Pale mauve bell-shaped flowers on racemes, followed by dark blue-black fruit.
Leaf attributes:
Black, strap-shaped leaves.
Growth habit:
Clump forming.
Light:
Partial to full sun.
Soil:
Moist, rich, acidic soils that is allowed to dry out between waterings.
Feeding:
Top dress with compost, manure or leaf mold in autumn.
Propagation Methods:
Sow seed as soon as ripe in pots and place in cold frame. | Divide in spring.
Pest or Disease:
Slugs and snails may be a problem with new growth. Root rot may also affect plants, especially with our wet winters.
Rainy Side Notes
Although grass-like, ophiopogon is not a grass but a member of the lily family. I planted with gold, lime green or yellow foliage ground covers. Beautiful contrast with the dark almost black strappy leaves of the mondo grass and light colored ground covers. One small strawberry pot I planted with selganella and topped with the mondo grass and it was a beautiful combo.
Slow at first to establish, once established it makes a beautiful ground cover. As nearest to black as you can get with plant material the leaves work well with flower arrangements. Also does well in containers.
