Topic: Hydrangea not that big.Posted: Mar-17-2006 at 6:32am |

I was bragging about how big my Hydrangea was last summer and I am taking it back. While I was pruning it I see it has self layered so it is at least 3 plants now, maybe more. Some Rhododendrons, Viburnums, and the Forsythia also do that in my yard.

I've had that happen, too, Fern. Free plants is a good thing. Are you going to move the extras to other areas or leave it as one big planting?

I'm going to leave them for now. It is actually moving into the shadier area [probably because it was moister there] so if it can bloom enough there it would be welcome. I had a hard time finding a place it liked, this was the third place I'd moved it to. This is a more protected, shady spot. The other spots it would get damaged by late spring freezes so it won't bloom well. I think it is a 'Blue Wave' lace cap, not a particularly hardy variety. Do other people have some of the newer varieties, and how do you like them? I'm waiting for the prices to go down some [or I find good deals] and then I'll find room for more. I like the way they don't need full sun as my trees are growing and my garden is getting shadier.

Have a pieris about 15 years old that has done that; has about a 3' baby growing about a foot from the main plant. I may move it this year

The song of the birds for mirth, One is nearer God's heart in the garden, Than anywhere else on Earth. |

Wish my Pieris would do that, maybe I should search underneath it to see.
