I was reading Trav's September calendar to see if I can start some onions this month. It looks like Walla Wallas are the ones to go with. If you start some earlier would it be worth doing succession planting to pull and use fresh next year?

I actually started to type "that's what I'd sow", but then I realized that's pretty obvious.
Actually my August sowing of onions didn't come up very well, so if I want any next spring/summer I'm going to need to get some Walla Walla seed soon! But I'll be scallion-less over winter unfortunately - thank heaven for leeks. As far as succession planting goes, it's really going to depend on your tastes. Some of the earlier-maturing OW onions seem to keep reasonably well, so if you're a "one onion is as good as another" person (which I am, at least to a degree) then there's not much point. But if you really like Walla Wallas, a succession planting is a great idea. Edited by trav - Sep-01-2007 at 8:37pm |

Thanks Trav. I like all kinds of onions, but Walla Wallas are my favorite. It's too late to succession sow, but I can start next year.
