Debbie's topic on buying organic got me musing; today is baking day for me, so I have lots of musing time.
That's what blogs are for, aren't they- expressing our musings?.... For the last few years, we have made a personal committment to simplicity. We are trying to live a little more lightly on the planet than most Americans. We rarely eat out- and do not use "convenience foods". Right now, we are trying to grow alot of our own food. This means that much of my "free" time in the summer is devoted to canning, drying, or freezing the extras from the garden.
We're even raising turkeys for the freezer!
And when we do buy food, we try to buy local, preferrably organic food. We don't eat organic because we think it's healthier (tho we Do think that) but because even an industrial organic farm is going to be easier on the environment than a conventional one. And local is even more important, as the cost of transporting food is environmentally high. And we have also become very mindful consumers, buying very little that we can do without. Oh, we're not saints- I still work 17 miles away from home, so need to drive that far 4-5 days a week. And we'll still drive 50 miles to take a hike in the mountains for recreation (tho we do that a lot less than we used to). But I think in this day and age, we need to be a little mindful of the impacts we have on the world. |
