bullet Topic: Bean cross pollination
    Posted: Jun-21-2008 at 9:50pm
I have 3 varieties of green bean planted in a row. I'd like to save seeds for next year, but I'm wondering if they will cross pollinate with each other? Two of them are heirloom varieties (Red Noodle and Purple Queen), the third is Kentucy Wonder.

Thanks for the help.

According to my readings, beans don't easily cross, and I have saved seed from varieties planted near each other, and the seed came true the following year. Some sources also say separating the beans a short distance will help keep the seed true, but mine were pole beans growing on the same tripod.

Thanks for the reply Silver. I did some further reading myself and found that beans can cross pollinate, but it is very unlikely so I think I'll try saving seed this fall.

Now I can plant my beans!

Had my first 70F maximum soil temp yesterday. That is the maximum last night at 4" of depth.

Last year I reached that point a month ago and in 2006 I had a minimum temp of 70F (@ 8 AM) by this time in June.

Actually my delay is more related to my day care job but it will be interesting to see how mine do versus friends that got germination on that warm weekend in May (I did have a 67F max soil temp that week.) Those beans have gone anywhere yet and some even lost theirs to frost.

Almost a dozen years ago, Trav was in the timing same position. It's not to late as he relates in his Vegetable Garden Timetable:

"A word about pole beans: Last year (1997) I procrastinated and didn't get them in the ground until July 7th. With the warm soil they shot up and grew amazingly fast, so I got a ton of beans in September. It's better to get them started in June of course, but it's still not too late!".
