Hi, a newbie here. I'm wanting to grow a vegetable garden this year. I'm very excited, but yet scared. I was wondering is it worth it for me to get a little portable greenhouse to start my seedlings in? Normally are winters are pretty gloomy so were lacking sun, but this year is definitely different. Any advice would be great. Thanks

A greenhouse is definitely a wonderful thing. However, if you're just starting out and expense is an issue (when isn't it?), I would suggest you can get the same result from either a cold frame (Make your own from salvaged windows and a very few 2"x4"s cut to match, making a depth of 8-12 inches inside; put your seedling in little pots and set them into the cold frame.), or from a tunnel of clear plastic over bent pvc pipe (less permanent, and fussier to make in my opinion).

If you go with the cold frame, you will find it's easy to look down on the plants inside, and easy to vent on extra warm days.

The advantages to either are, you will know after this year whether this is something you want to invest in further; you will know whether an unheated greenhouse will be sufficient in your location; you will have a lot of fun for not a lot of investment.

And, do let us know what you decide to do!

Many of us start our seeds in the house, using 2 inch cube trays, pre-mixed bagged seedling soil, and a growlux florescent tube light hanging from adjustable chains from hooks in the ceiling. Good instructions are available in catalogs like Territorial Seeds and a book highly recommended by gardeners in this forum is: Growing Vegetables West of the Cascades by Steve Soloman Every year is a learning experience so don't be afraid--many times the most vivid learning experiences come from mistakes.

And in any case, garden plants are friendly, especially vegetables.
