![]() Topic: Where to find Damson Plum treePosted: Jan-05-2011 at 1:27am |

I don't know if they will do well here (slight north of Seattle) but I LOVE the damson plum and NEED one!
Not sure where to buy one. The plum trees have to be bought regionally don't they? Raintree has a damson type and thats not quite what I want. From what little info I've been able to find there are 2 types and only 1 is considered a true damson. Not sure I could find that info twice or if it is even correct. So if I can't get a damson what plum do you all think has the best flavor? Edited by bakingbarb - Jan-05-2011 at 1:31am |

I have a Damson that I bought from Burnt Ridge Nursery. It is the closest thing I've found to the Damson that grew in my grandmothers yard in Fresno,Ca. here's the description from Burnt Ridge:
BLUE DAMSON PLUM (Prunus insititia) Oval blue plums used exclusively for jam, jellies & sauces. Fruit is small, freestone, tart & produced in great abundance. Late blooming & very dependable. Originated near Damascus, Syria prior to the 1st century B.C. Self fertile. Zone 4-9. |

The best place I know of to find rare varieties is the Spring fruit propagation fair put on by the Home Orchard Society in Portland, OR. This year it is March 17. See http://www.homeorchardsociety.org for more details. Also Nick Botner, a fruit collector in Southern Oregon may have the plum you are looking for.
