I like this simple and not too expensive planter made of cinder blocks charming. Something you can add to on a whim. If I did this project, I would paint them with thinned down with water exterior paints so it's like a watercolor to get rid of the gray and make it looked aged.

Recyclart

A blog out of Texas by Pam Penick called Digging gives detailed instructions on how to build these and keep the soil in place on the cantilevered ones.

What do you think?

I've been seeing these popping up all over the place recently, from simple ones to very large and complex constructions. I like them a lot and agree with you that they'd look better with a bit of enhancing to the blocks. I have some blocks stacked behind my shed and will probably do something similar when I get "a round tuit".

We have used cement block for raised veggie beds for several years. I have used either short snapdragons, or small marigolds with lobelia for trim. We lived on a fairly steep hill, so making stairstep raised beds was very convenient and not "set in stone". I like the looks of the sedums. Next year...

@ Debbbie ! Now back to my packing...we're heading to South Africa via New York. Really looking forward to seeing Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden although it's not the best time of year for it.

Wow! Have a great time! Post lots of pics of their flowers. Oh wait... it's their winter. Hope there are some winter flowers to enjoy, otherwise textures and winter foliage.

Oh, that looks neato. I like the idea of thinned-painting them. We have a low cement retaining wall in the back on top of which are some really decaying wooden planter boxes - now I'm thinking of replacing those with some of these. SURELY the sides would not rot out like wood!
