Hi! I've been trying to grow artichokes in Portland (green globe variety from the Portland Nursery), the plants have produced only one or two tiny fruits each. They seem afflicted with something like powdery mildew.
What's strange to me is I've seen huge thriving plants in some gardens around town, though the fruits look a bit unusual. This plant was spotted near Mount Tabor; anyone know what variety it might be? Is it even an artichoke at all? Any advice on good varieties and growing techniques? Thanks!

That looks like cardoon a relative of artichokes.
What variety of artichoke are you growing? I grew violetto a purple budded variety and green globe. I believe I grew them for three years, for sure two years. They are tricky to grow in our climate, but you living in Portland may get more heat than where I live on the Puget Sound. Here are two links that may be helpful. The photo of the Violetto came from my garden. Artichokes Vegetable Garden Timetable |

Thanks! I'm sure you're right about the cardoon. That explains a lot.
