I have one last question before this page closes.

I have a nice OLD (aprox. 20 yrs.) Jap. maple that is having a bark problem. I have noticed that the bark on the larger limbs is spliting and was wondering if this is a natural thing or is my 20+ ft. maple on its way to dying? I would really hate to lose it but if it is dying I will need to start thinking about replacing it.

Hope someone with the answer is still checking in to the forum. All help appreciated.

I don't have an answer, but mine is doing the same thing, so I wouldn't mind hearing any advice on this as well.

Frost cracks or sunscald because of the colds winters we've had (not last winter, but the 3 before that) is the most likely cause. I've got a few on some of my trees. There isn't much you can do about them but keep them open and clean.

You can still ask questions in the general area. You can easily sign up and if you want you can have it send you emails when you get a response.

This will be a permanent place to ask questions, (it says it is temporary, but I've decided to put it there) or shoot the breeze with everyone. I hope you will switch over to the new way to do our communications. I think once you get used to it, you will like how easy it is to use.
