At my old house, my most reliable lily was a martagon lily (source forgotten) that was a wierd kinda spotty orange. The mice/voles seemed to leave it alone and I usually got 10-15 flower spikes every year unless Adak (Siberian husky) decided to eat the flowers (bad dog!). It formed a huge clump that I dug and moved to my sister's place and it's thriving there. When it goes dormant, I'm gonna beg a little piece for my new garden since the orangey color will work in my new border. I want to get more martagon lilies at my new place and have found some albas but would love to collect more. Anyone seen good sources lately for more than just a couple forms?
I found Funkie Gardens and they have some really lovely forms with clearer colors, but they are strictly walk-in (no mail-order) and are located in Wisconsin (sigh).
edited to add: I already know about B&D Lilies and have ordered from them in the past but they haven't offered such lovely clear-colored martagons!

I just stumbled onto another martagon lily source and they can ship to the US although they are in Manitoba.

I sure wish it was this easy to get Pleione orchids from Canada!!! I sent off a trial order so we'll see how it goes.

Posted: Jul-11-2009 at 1:11pm Just wondering.....am I the only one growing martagon lilies here????? I did a search on the forum archives and only found one other post with the lily mentioned. I do enjoy some of the other turk's cap lily types as well as they look more like species, and I think they blend more easily in a perennial border situation than many of the other lilies (Asiatics, trumpets, orientals). However, I admit that I've lost hundreds of dollars worth of lily bulbs to mice/voles....and the martagon lily type seems to be the sole survivor...hence my enthusiasm for the plant! We'll see what happens at this new location and maybe I can suceed with other lily types here in situations OTHER than containers.

I am growing some for the first time this year, but no blooms. I grow a lot of my lilies in containers, just because I like them up close and personal.

Here are a few that I have photographed. The buds and foliage are amazing as seen in the first two.
This one photographed at Joy Creek Nursery is Lilium martagon var. caucasicum:
The next one taken also at Joy Creek Nursery is Lilium martagon 'White Selection':
