Putting the Territorial Seed Company Rumors to Rest
Debbie Teashon
Rumor has it that Monsanto Corporation owns the Pacific Northwest-based seedhouse, Territorial Seed. This rumor is simply not true. Tom and Julie Johns, who still own the company, purchased Territorial Seeds from Steve Solomon back in 1985.
When Monsanto purchased the huge wholesale seed company Seminis, Territorial looked for other sources of seed and phased out buying their seeds from Seminis. By 2012, Territorial no longer purchased anything from the Monsanto subsidiary.
Rumors such as this one can hurt small businesses. Territorial Seed Company continues to trial seeds for our unique and challenging temperate, Mediterranean climate. Their important efforts to provide quality seed for the Northwest gardener help us with the success of our homegrown edible production.
So let’s put the rumors to rest and pass only the truth on instead!
And the best part? No GMOs from Territorial Seed Company.
