I'd like to try a brugmansia in the Lake Stevens, WA area. I'd prefer pink if I could. Does anyone have a suggested variety that might be more successful in my area? Does it have to be planted in a pot or can I grow it in the ground?
Thanks!

Hi Les!
You can grow it in the ground provided you either consider it an annual only or you take precautions to help it winter over. I know one gardening couple who have had success encircling their brugmansia with hardware cloth (aka chicken wire) and stuffing hay or straw (can't recall exactly which they used) into the enclosure. I think they even managed to get it to winter over last year. Unprotected, it might come through in our mildest winters but it is a gamble.
If you don't want to go to those lengths, keep it in a large pot and move it into a protected area (garage works for some) during the winter.
I look forward to hearing about the different varieties from others. I hope to grow one someday, too.

I was afraid that I'd have to keep it in a pot. They're gorgeous!

I just bought my first brugmansia - just a twig, actually - and I plan to keep it in a pot and bring it in for the winter. In fact, right now I have it on my dining table next to a south-facing window. I've never seen one in person, so all I have to go on is photos (but not of the variety I chose) and descriptions in books. It will be interesting to see how quickly it grows, and how much it grows (will I need a bigger dining room next year?). Will I get blossoms my first year? Will they last long? Will it bloom for an extended period of time? Will I become a brugmansia addict and want one of every color?
