GROWING GUIDE

Origin:
Garden.
Plant Group:

Sunset zones: 1-9, 14-24.
USDA zones: 4-8.
Mature size:
Height: 12 inches (30 cm).
Width: 18 inches (45 cm).
Flowering period:
Mid-spring to midsummer.
Flowering attributes:
Racemes of red, heart-shaped flowers; the flowers hang on arching stems.
Leaf attributes:
Deeply cut, fern-like, gray-green foliage.
Growth habit:
Spreading perennial.
Light:
Partial shade; full sun if extra moisture is provided.
Soil:
Moist, fertile, well-drained, humus rich soil.
Feeding:
Side dress with compost or manure. Fertilize in spring with a complete organic fertilizer.
Propagation Methods:
Root cuttings in winter. | Division early spring. | Stem cuttings in spring.
Pests and Diseases:
Aphids, slugs and snails may be a problem, although I have not seen them be a serious problem.

Dicentra comes from the Greek words dis–two and kentron–spur.

Dicentra 'Luxuriant' is considered a hybrid between D. eximia, an Eastern American native and D. formosa, a Western American native. Both species have produced many named hybrids including this exceptional one. It was one of the first plants ever patented. The hybrid blooms through August, if you pick spent flowers and keep well watered during our drought season.

As with most Bleeding hearts, hummingbirds and bees are attracted to it.
