GROWING GUIDE

Origin:
Garden.
Plant Group:
Perennial.
Hardiness:
Sunset zones:1-9, 14-24.
USDA zones: 5-9.
Mature size:
Height: 8-12 inches (20-30 cm).
Width: 12 inches (30 cm).
Flowering period:
Late spring to early summer.
Flowering attributes:
Panicles of red, tubular-shaped flowers on purple stems.
Leaf attributes:
White foliage splashed with dark green variegation, with pinkish fall color.
Growth habit:
Clump forming.
Light:
Part shade to full sun.
Soil:
Light, fertile, moist, well-drained soil, low in peat.
Feeding:
Side dress with compost or manure in fall. Fertilize in spring with a complete organic fertilizer.
Propagation Methods:
Divide in early spring by digging up plant and dividing the clump into pieces.
In autumn pull off rooted offsets from the sides of older crowns. Pot the offsets up and overwinter in cold frame or greenhouse.
Remove offsets in spring and root as a cutting.

 

Rainy Side Notes

At a plant exchange several years ago, a friend gave me Heuchera 'Monet'. The leaves look as if an impressionist painter laid down splashes of green paint on a white canvas, then painted stalks of coral red bells as a garnish above the plant. Year round, the striking foliage captures attention. The leaves turn pink in autumn, when the temperatures turn cold and the rains return. However, the neon crimson colored flowers skyjack the admiration when they bloom in summer, and the hummingbirds fly excitedly amongst its stalks.

In 1998, Terra Nova Nursery introduced this selection to the nursery trade. Lucky for heuchera lovers everywhere, its owner, Dan Heims, found it as a sport amongst others at a Seattle flower show.

Every few years in late summer to early autumn, lift and replant the crown just above soil surface.
