Rainy Side Notes

These cheerful violas, with wispy whiskers across the face of their flowers, are easy enough to start from seed. These cute, little guys work well in containers or planted out in the garden, particularly when planted in mass. In fall they are brilliant with the hues of autumn.
I grow the violas in a container at the base of a vine maple hybrid, Acer ‘Pacific Fire’. The violas cover the pot with rambunctious-looking orange and burgundy flowers, a knockout pairing with the maple’s red stems and yellow fall foliage.
Although violas are perennial, they are often treated as annuals and biennials.
